The Bacteria Kingdom
The bacteria are all microscopic.
While some cause disease, they are important to life as we know it.
Bacteria are made of cells, as are all living things apart from viruses, but they are simpler than the cells of other living things.
One of them is called "a bacterium".
While we might say "the fox is an increasingly urban species", that usage is unusual. ("Foxes are... urban" being mor common.) However, given that bacteria are microscopic, usage is a bit different. Hence, "the E. coli bacterium is a major member of the gut flora of mammals" would be usual.

The "bacteria" kingdom is one of the five primary sub-divisions of all living things.
